MANUEL

FIRST, FREE YOURSELF FROM WRONG THOUGHTS AND HABITS. SECOND, ESTABLISH GOOD HABITS AND PERFORM GOOD DEEDS. IF YOU KEEP ON TRYING, YOU WILL IMPROVE. A SAINT IS A SINNER WHO NEVER GAVE UP. NEVER GIVE UP!

I hated yoga the first time I tried it. Too hot and humid. That free community class in Cape Town a decade ago was something I never thought I’d repeat. This wasn’t what yoga was supposed to be. To this day I have no idea why I went back. Maybe, deep down, I knew I needed it. Once I got used to it, it became a hobby. I started thinking about the historical background of Bikram Yoga, but unlike many practitioners I didn’t go to teacher training right away. I was more curious about its origins, so I went to the source of the source, so to speak. I enrolled in Ghosh’s College in Kolkata, and that changed my view on yoga forever. They put therapy first, and as a trained scientist I loved their methodical approach in prescribing yoga for all sorts of ailments. I dug deeper into the roots of the Kolkata yoga system and discovered they were heavily intertwined with general physical culture and bodybuilding, and surprisingly free of religious dogma. My time in India also impressed upon me the spiritual elements of yoga. I learned that for hundreds of years yoga was practiced not so much for its physical effects, but predominantly for the spiritual peace it brings. The physical side became more prominent in the last few decades, as recognition grew that without taking care of your ‘temple’ the soul that resides within cannot bloom. This philosophy is central to our practice here and it’s something I teach my students in every class. To complete this stage of my education I took Bikram’s training in 2018. I still regard Bikram Yoga as an integral part of my life, simply because having studied its poses and breathing exercises in such depth I have a thorough understanding of how and why it is so effective. Since then I’ve toured the world on a journey of continuous education and improvement, taking in everywhere from Vienna to Hawaii, Washington D.C. to Seoul, and now finally back to central Switzerland, where I was born and raised.
